Navigating The New York City Streets
There is a reason New York City has been nicknamed the concrete jungle, and it certainly lives up to that name. Often, for someone from out of town, the densely concentrated layout of the city can look like a big jumble of streets and sidewalks. However, knowing a few simple things about the NYC streets can help you feel more centered when navigating the city streets. First, the streets in Manhattan work on a grid system, which means they really are not as complicated as they look. The streets go one way, the avenues go another, and most of it is numbered in order. Once you understand the grid, you can figure out which way is uptown and which way is downtown. Another thing that is easy to remember and that can come in handy if you get disoriented, is that in New York, all even streets run East! If you are on a one way street, you know you are going East if you are walking with the flow of traffic.
